Contraband 2012 – Perfectly Awesome Or Plain Silly?

Contraband - Mark Wahlberg

Why did I desperately want to watch this movie?  The trailers seemed very promising and made me believe that it’s a complete action movie with heists and fights and smuggling skills.

Too bad, this movie is nothing about the above said.

This movie is much more of drama than crime or action and involves too little, I repeat, TOO LITTLE of action scenes.

For the ones who have saved 100 minutes of their life by not watching this movie, it’s about a man named Chris Farraday (Mark Wahlberg) who used to be a smuggler, one of the best (as said in the movie), bringing in counterfeits through ships until he marries Kate Farrady (Kate Beckinsale) and leaves his criminal life behind to live a legal life.

Did I mention he has two kids? A movie like this, sure needs bait. Doesn’t it?

When Chris’s brother in law fails to complete his deal of smuggling drugs worth $ 700,000, his dealers claim a counterfeit or else they kill him. That’s when Chris has to jump in again in his criminal boots to pay the dealers back in order to save his family who has now got involved.

Those of you who watch a movie for pass time and care not much about the plot, this movie will serve the intention of entertaining 100 minutes of your life.

For those like me, who go deeper into the plot to know the reasons behind whats what, then this movie fails rather a lot many times.

{Spoiler Alert AHEAD}

Plot Hole # 1 :

Chris decides to bring counterfeit money to save his brother in law and his family but denies to bring in drugs even though his family are at constant risk. What difference would it have made if he bought illegal money or the drugs. He just had to pay them back how so ever they wanted it to be.

Drugs would have been easier to handle in size.

Plot Hole # 2 :

The dealers are more interested in $ 700,000 worth drugs instead of $ 2.5 Million worth counterfeit money? And there is a whole lot of mess when Chris denies to get the drugs.

In the end, when Chris only returns with the Counterfeit money, there is nothing about drugs. Everyone is happy and joking around.

Plot Hole # 3 :

The Colombian bandits, although so many in number with greater resources and power, need Chris to do block a van which they want to steal stuff from.

Chris agrees and he blocks a 6 Ton van by his 2 ton Van?

Plot Hole # 4 :

After successfully stealing the painting from the van in Colombia, the bandits decide to remove the painting from the wood cover? Seriously? Why not just shove it in your van, go to your hideout and do it peacefully?

Plot Hole # 5 :

When Sebastian comes to pick Kate and she finds out that he is drunk, she asks her children to get in her car and drives home. Then late at night, she goes back to Sebastian’s house to pick some important stuff she left behind. We see her picking up some clothes, shoes, toothpaste and brush. WOW, now that’s seriously important stuff to risk your life with.

Plot Hole # 6 :

Chris’s wife gets hit behind her head at night. Instantly there is heavy flow of blood gushing out and she falls unconscious. Meanwhile Sebastian wraps her up in a plastic sheet, cleans his bathroom and then dumps her in a pit.

Next morning, Chris finds her in the pit that was being filled with cement.

Next scene, she is fine. Boy she must have had gallons of blood stored in her body to survive that so long.
