Hair Emergency – Sticky Greasy Oily Hair !!!

Girl With Bad Hair Day

Did you just come out of your sparkly elegant shower only to realize that something is wrong with your hair?

Problem :

Your hair are Sticky Greasy and Oily from the crown of your head. It feels as if someone has put some gel over your head. And even after your hair has dried, it feels like they are still wet and stiff.

You may even feel like someone has sprayed a hair spray to hold them in place.

Your First Analysis :

You start thinking that you may not have shampooed your hair properly or may be you did not rinse them off well. So you decide to take the shower again with proper shampooing and proper conditioning only to realize that the problem is still the same.

Even after many showers, the Sticky Greasy Oily Hair Crown exists ultimately leaving you worried.

Girl Having Bad Hair Day

Causes :

This problem arises due to Excessive Sebum that is produced through the pores at the crown of your head. Excessive sebum may arise from one of the following reasons:

a. A change in shampoo or conditioner can also cause this issue as may be your head was used to the previous shampoo or conditioner.

b. A sudden change in your diet.

c. Washing your hair with hot water opens the pores of your head, giving way to excessive sebum.

d. Hormonal Changes.

Stressed With Hair Problem

Solution :

a . If you go to a parlor, they will probably give you a Hair Fortification Treatment that will fix your problem. So if you do not care much about huge bills, then go to a parlor and you will be back home with beautiful grease-free soft hair.

b. Here is what you can do at home to get rid of this problem :

1. Take a little vinegar and dilute it with some water, then apply on your scalp for about 5 minutes.

2. Next wash your hair with Liquid Dish Washing Soap.

3. When you are done rinsing off the soap, have the last rinse by mixing about half cup vinegar in a mug of water.

This will show good results from the first day and you will feel the grease considerably less after the first shower. Continue this until you are completely relieved .

Additionally, you can add a little rose water to your last rinse if you are worried about the dish washing soap smell or the vinegar smell. But this will definitely give you Soft, Beautiful, Shiny and most of all Grease Free hair.

c. Try using a good brand Fortifying Shampoo or one that mentions Sebum control.

d. Remember to wash your hair with Cold Water to close the pores on your scalp.

P.S: If the problem persists over and again, make sure you see a doctor.

If this helped you, make sure you leave a message so that others may benefit as well :)

I am glad it worked out for you. If I may, I will recommend that you use Sunsilk Green (Lively, Clean & Fresh). If you read it’s description behind you will see that it is meant for “Sebum Control.”

The wax/grease/sebum just showed up all of a sudden two days ago. I’d never had anything like it before. I had switched to a new shampoo (ulta hydrating) that morning and I figured I just didn’t rinse it all out. But the next day the wax wouldn’t go away even with 4 shampoo cycles. The third day I tried a new shampoo thinking maybe the ulta hydrating was going over board. After one wash it was still there … three washes later, still there!

Then I did a google search and found this and several forum sites saying to try Palmolive, vinegar, and clarifying shampoos. I bought several products at lunch and ran home to wash again. At the sink I just lathered the crown of my head with Palmolive (extra degreaser with oxy clean) and let it sit for 5-10 min. Rinsed and I could already tell it was mostly gone. Just as an extra precaution I rinsed and let the vinegar sit for 5 min too. Then rinsed and blew dry. It’s about 80% gone now. I’ll wash again with Palmolive and a clarifying shampoo tomorrow, but it is so nice to at least not look like I haven’t washed my hair in a week.

Thanks for putting this explanation out there … it is really disturbing how fast the grease/wax appears. And distressing to not understand what it is or how to get rid of it. Thank you for the great advice.

Funny thing is your hair will be absolutely fine one moment and the next moment your hair is full of waxy grease….
If Palmolive doesn’t give you good results, I recommended Sunsilk Green (Lively, Clean & Fresh) in my previous comment and would recommend you the same. It is very efficient in dealing with this….
*I should probably be paid by the Sunsilk complany* Lol….
Thank you for leaving by a comment as it will help others in the same mess.

Just finished drying my hair and it is completely gone! I substituted Orginal Dawn for the Palmolive and after the second vinegar rinse I was with Suave Daily Clarifying Shampoo and did not use conditioner. I hair extremely thick and dry hair so it’s a bit dry but I don’t even care! Lol just so happy that it’s finally gone!

I got SO annoyed because my crown just never felt clean. Right now, I just touched it and it’s NORMAL again! :D
I put vinegar in water and rinsed it then washed it with oil control cleansing shampoo. Repeated this 3 times and dried it. It’s ALL gone! I didn’t use any dishwashing soap. I just used vinegar and some deep cleansing shampoo and it was gone! Good luck to you guys! :) Hope something works for you. I know I hated it when I had it. My hair is So much softer right now. :D

Do you apply the vinegar when your hair is wet or dry?

    • Ace
Posted on November 6, 2012 at 12:31 am | Permalink

When you are applying Vinegar before the shower, you need to apply it to the dry hair. Let it stay for 5 minutes and then you can shampoo your hair. Then you make a last rinse with Vinegar.

So I’ve been following the vinegar + dishwashing soap remdy for about a month now (every time I wash my hair)…and I notice that when I stop doing it, the stickiness comes back and it doesn’t look like it has been reduced. Also, I’m worried that the acidity of the vinegar might be damaging to my hair…any suggestions?

    Thanks :)

    • Ace
Posted on November 19, 2012 at 9:34 pm | Permalink

The acidity is only helping cut the exessive sebum (oilyness) of your hair. So no damage there but then of course this is not the solution. Dishwashing soap is for dishes :) .
Is there is anything different that you did recently. Something that you started eating, any recent stress, hormonal changes, change in daily routine etc. These may be the cause.

If not then, have you tried using any fortifying shampoo or any sebum controlling shampoo? It will work effectively.

I’ve started doing Yoga, so that may be the cause but I can’t be too sure….nothing else has changed. I will try a sebum controlling shampoo and let you know if it works.

        Thanks!

Great advice. I just tried the vinegar remedy and it has helped my hair so much. I’m sure the next time it will be completely gone. Is this a once a week treatment? or can it be done daily?

Depends on the severity of your hair condition. You can try it every day for a few days only, if the stickiness still continues, I wouldn’t recommend using Vinegar continually as the absolute solution. Go for clarifying shampoos that are meant for this problem.

It depends on the reason why it’s incurring. Usually this just comes out of the blue so whether or not it will come back again, only time can tell. If it stays or keeps coming back, you can use a fortifying shampoo that will get rid of it for you.

I have exactly same problem with the people here. Can i know what kind of vinegar that we talking about? Any kind of vinegar? will it work without the liquid dish washing soap?

    • Ace
Posted on March 22, 2013 at 9:11 am | Permalink

White vinegar used for cooking. Apple cider vinegar would work as well but I don’t think anyone would want that sort of smell in their hair. It should go away with the vinegar itself. The liquid dish washing soap is a separate remedy unless you have a severe case.

If the problem persists, get a fortification or sebum controlling shampoo and that will solve everything.

I had this problem last week. Each time I washed my hair it was getting worse. It looked greasy and felt waxy and sticky… A hair dresser advised that I scrub my hair with washing up liquid whilst dry, leave it in my hair for a few minutes and then wash it out. I didn’t want to use any conditioner just in case. I dried my hair and the substance was gone. Amazing. I’m still wary of using conditioner but my hair is back to normal.

I’m usually really uneasy about trying home remedies because of my bad luck with them, but I will give an A++++ for the vinegar and dish soap wash. Worked the first time and its so nice to have my normal crown of hair back. I used Dawn ultra, and a Sally’s spray bottle for the vinegar mix. Thank you so much!
