Orphaned as an infant, brought up by her cruel cold Aunt, sent to a school where she was unaccountably cast out as a liar, and witnessed the death of her only friend, it is a story of a woman who has experienced the most terrifying circumstances that one could possibly imagine, yet with her courage, resilience and love for learning, she manages to grow into a cultured, honorable and accomplished woman.
This movie is based on the 19th century novel ‘Jane Eyre’, written by Charlotte Bronte, which has been adapted into a motion picture several times over the past hundred years. However, the 2011 movie stands out as it has successfully overcome the challenge of effectively presenting this wordy narrative in a film, without making it logically inconsistent or losing the stories potency.
The film begins with a solitary figure clad in gray, running across a rain swept moor. She is breathless and stumbling; however, she keeps running, until she finally finds a house where she faints and is rescued by a compassionate parson. She refuses to tell the parson or his sisters anything about her past, but in a series cleverly set flashbacks the film presents Jane’s (Mia Wasikowska) hard and tormented childhood.
The answer to Jane’s identity and past remains mysterious, until in a long flashback the film unfolds the story of Jane when she attains work at Thornfield Hall as a governess to a young French girl. There she meets her master, Mr.Edward Fairfax Rochester (Micheal Fassbender), who is initially cold to Jane and tries to intimidate her with blunt questioning, but Jane answers him impressively without much hesitation.
Even though Jane and Edward are different in their manners, demeanor and values, there is something beyond the apparent that connects their souls in an unearthly bond. One reason for this could be the solitude, isolation and grief both have faced. Nevertheless, Edward lacks direction and hope, while Jane is aspiring and positive of the future. Jane, being equally intelligent to Edward, provides him with a company he has always yearned for and every conversation with her is a glimmer of hope to him. They are in love with each other, and Edward proposes her to marry him.
The day of their union arrives, but it brings with it a secret which will prevent them from joining in a marriage. To protect hers and her beloved’s honor, Jane resolutely runs away from Thornfield Hall. Her ears yearn for his voice and her heart aches for his words, but she doesn’t turn back.
