‘The Help’ – Change Begins With A Whisper

The Help Movie Poster

Starring Emma Stone, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer, “The Help” movie is a smashing box office adaptation of Kathryn Stockett‘s bestseller in early 60′s. Although with the usual Hollywood dramatized touch, the movie does justice to the book’s fans in terms of storytelling. But like many other adaptations, this movie also misses out on the many emotional undertones of the book.

Viola Davis Black Maid

Revolving around 3 women, the reliably strong Viola Davis plays Aibileen, a long-suffering black maid but a loving woman who develops a strong bond with the white socialite Skeeter played by Emma Stone.

Skeeter is a fresh college graduate who sets out to write a book due to her journalistic streak. She wants to uncover the heart wrenching stories of black maids from the perspective of their ‘help’.

Davis And Stone Holding Hands

Skeeter looks high and low for black maids in Jackson who will be willing to give her an interview but to no avail. They are too afraid of the open racism i.e. losing jobs, facing abuse and even killing. Until one day she meets Aibileen who agrees to give her an interview along with the headstrong Minny, played by Octavia Spencer.

Octavia Spencer In Tears

Bryce Dallas Howard plays the steely role of Hilly, Minny’s employer.

Without a doubt, the movie’s core character is Viola Davis as she powerfully presents Aibileen and ultimately faces unspeakable tragedies and complete injustice but with an unwavering faith.

Viola Davis In Maid Clothes

Emma Stone also does justice to the role as the plucky, progressive Skeeter but Spencer fails to convey the adequate amount of Minny‘s personal bitterness and rage.

Minny And Aibileen In Market

Screenwriter-director Tate Taylor did a good enough job for the movie with his Southern background although some emotional plots don’t seem to be woven together perfectly but he manages to represent the Southern culture perfectly. Also he fails to convey the very darker undertones of the plot.

Although with a lot of flaws, “The Help” has a great acting cast and storyline which is what we wanted in this year’s Hollywood sea of comedies and superhero drama. So ‘Help’ yourself to your fill with “The Help” Trailer below!!
